School records are an excellent and often overlooked resource for family and local history, giving much information, not just about the child but also the local community.  They are well worth pursuing for additional family history material.

This logbook was handed into Horsforth Museum in 2018 along with a logbook for Horsforth St Margaret’s School.  Knowing my interest in school records it was passed to me.  It has now been deposited at North Yorkshire Record Office but I took the opportunity to have a good look through it.   

Due to privacy rules we have to be thoughtful of any detrimental comments regarding living persons so I have been selective although I have seen nothing to upset anyone, so far.

The starting date is January 1926

The logbook commences on 4th January 1926.  Here are some of the entries for the early years:-

4th Jan 1926 School reopens after Christmas holiday – 21 children present 2 absent.  Miss Hilda Harrison supplementary teacher of Pool has been appointed temporarily to take the place of Miss Myers.

15th Jan 1926 A medical certificate for Rowland Newbould received, recommending exclusion for four months (illness).

16th March 1926 Dora Smith’s name has been removed from the register as she has returned to Skirpenbeck.

10th May 1926 Jessie Darnbrook has left the village so her name has been removed from the register.

8th Jun 1926 Excluded 9 children who are suffering from whooping cough.

10th Jun Sent William Wood and Maurice Newby home as they are coughing badly.

22nd Jun Received notice to close the school for 3 weeks for whooping cough.

13th Jul 1926 Re-opened today 11 children present. Have removed Annie Barker from the register as they have left Leathley.

14th Jul 1926 Miss Harrison will be from now until the summer holiday as she is sitting for an examination.

19th Nov 1926 Percentage for the week 100%.  The children are having an extra half hour play as a reward for the perfect attendance. – Didn’t happen at my school!

10th Dec 1926 Wilfred Chapman, a visitor in Leathley has been admitted this week.

10th Jan 1927 Mary Thorpe is now 14 years old & has left.  Wilfred Chapman has returned home.

3rd Mar 1927 William Wood’s mark had to be cancelled this afternoon.  He had to go to Farnley owing to the death of his

Grandmother.

1st Apr 1927 The new school year has begun.  Florence Smith has left. The children have been promoted.  I believe the school year did not change until post WW2.

23rd April 1927 The Smith family have left village this Easter.  Therefore Mrs Smith has resigned her position as cleaner of the school.  The three children have had their names removed from the register.  A pity the forenames were not given. David and Arthur Robinson have been admitted.

3rd May 1927 Mrs Clarke has undertaken the cleaning of the school.

29th Jul 1927 Molly MacKenzie, Mona Whiteley & Maurice Newby lave school today as they are all 14.  Ivy Thompson developed eye trouble this been and has been excluded.

29th Aug 1927 School reopens today, 5 children have left and 1 admitted.  No names unfortunately!

7th Oct 1927 Percentage for the week 100%.  A long play has been awarded in consequence.

FindMyPast have some school logbooks and admission registers on their site.  I would recommend checking this out on a regular basis as they appear to still be adding material from when it was first launched several years ago.

20th May Edward Ayrton returned today after an absence of five weeks caused by illness.

21st June Gave holiday in the afternoon so that Mrs Hodgson may begin to clean the schoolhouse.

29th August Lucy Thomas and Horace Johnson have left this school.  They have been staying at Westhouse with their grandfather for a short time and so attended this school.  They have now left the neighbourhood.

 6th September Eliz. Ellen Brown has been poorly all week.  Eliz.  A Shuttleworth has been kept at home all week to work and Tom Brown has not attended the school for three weeks.  Annie Phizacherley has left the school, she has been living with her grandparents and has now gone to Bradford to live with her aunt.

29th October Admitted Julia Helen Woodard, an infant aged four.  She is the daughter of a lady staying in the neighbourhood and will probably attend until Christmas.

1st November Julia Woodard attended the school three times and was only once present when the registers were marked.  I asked Mrs Woodard to see that her little girl came to school in time to be marked present but she was offended that her child was expected to conform to the rules and she has taken her child from the school.

4th November Admitted Herbert Edward and Stephen Capstick.

11th November Readmitted Alice Capstick.  She has been absent since 22nd February suffering from an abscess.

2nd September Edward, Dora and Isabel Ayrton are absent today and I have heard that a younger child has the Scarlet Fever so that the abovementioned children will not be able to attend the school for some time.  Frank Bainbridge attended the school after a month’s absence.  He has been at home to help make the hay.

24th September Lambert, William and Bertie Brown are staying at home by Dr Griffiths orders because their father is very ill with typhoid fever.

7th October Admitted George Nelson on the 6th.  Alexina Atkinson ill yesterday and obliged to go home in the morning.

24TH October Jane, Fred and Ernest Bartle have left the school because their father has removed from the parish.

17th November Admitted Catherine Charlotte Agatha Windle who has come to live with her grandmother at Westhouse for a few weeks.

12th January Admitted Mary Alice Lee, Tom Whaley and John William Dawson.

16th January Bertie, Stephen and Alice Capstick leave school on Friday afternoon before receiving two hours secular instruction and in consequence their attendances for the afternoon are cancelled.  These children live a great distance from the school and board and lodge in the village during the week and return home on Friday afternoons and are obliged to leave early in order to reach home before dark. 

6th April Admitted Harry Fawcett and Towers Atkinson.

11th May Lizzie Carr has been kept at home all the week to help her mother.  Walter Bowlerworth is away from home and William Brown has been ill all the week.

25th May Admitted Daisy Shuttleworth aged eight years.

26th May Admitted Annie Drinhall aged six years, who does not know her alphabet.

29th May William Brown continues to be very ill.  Edward & Phyllis Ayrton are suffering from influenza.  Arthur Whaley, Agnes Brown and John Hawke are ill and supposed to be suffering from the influenza.

3rd June Edward Ayrton and Arthur Whaley returned to school, they both seem weak.  Phyllis Ayrton and John Hawke are both too ill to attend.   Annie Drinhall and George Levitt are also ill.

8TH June Eliabeth Carr left the school.  She has passed the 7th standard and has left the school to help her mother with the work of the household.

15th June Walter Bowlerwell has left the school.  He has been staying for some months with an aunt at Ingleton and has now returned to his parents at Kendall.

17TH August John H Hawke has left the school because his parents have left the neighbourhood.  Herbert Capstick has left the school and is now attending Ingleton National School.  Admitted John Richardson, an infant aged 5 years.

24th August Admittted Roger Parker, Martha and Agnes Mc Cumshay, Edmund Capstick and Martha Annie Parker.

31st August Admitted Thomas and John Fawcett.

4th September John Farrer has not attended the school since the midsummer vacation.  He is kept at home to help make hay.  Bertie Brown has been very ill and has not attended the school since the 17th August.  Edmund Capstick has been absent all this week through sickness.

7th September Martha and Agnes McCumshay have left the school because their parents have removed to Ingleton.

11th September John & Mary Ellen Farrer have been absent all this week.  Bertie Brown is not yet strong enough to attend the school.  Ernest E Brown has been absent all the week, he has gone to Bradford to visit a brother.

28th March Very unsettled weather this week causing much irregularity.  C & N Foster absent nearly all week suffering from severe colds.  Thos. Beresford absent on account of distance and weather.  E Metcalfe same reason and A Banks suffering from a cut finger.

9th April Severe colds prevalent among the children.  From this cause C & N Foster, H & J Turnbull, have been very irregular this week.  S A Metcalf absent all week, reason “wanted at home.”  They live at Higher Greenfield out of distance.

23rd April Attendance not very good, average only 12.  N Metcalf, Mary Metcalf, Robt Banks, Jno Turnbull (infant), Eliz A Lambert, S A Metcalf absent all week, no reason assigned. Deborah Turnbull present one half day only.  Reason for absence given as “illness”.  Margt Metcalf and L Metcalf came only on Friday owing to mother’s absence from home.

30th April Several children absent all week and several irregular.  Deborah Turnbull reason assigned illness.  H Turnbull, S A Metcalf, A A Atkinson absent all week through home duties.  Two of these are half timers.   John Turnbull an infant under 5 absent all week.

14th May Attendance rather low this week caused by lambing time.  Deborah Turnbull absent all week reason illness.  Jno Turnbull (infant under 5) absent all week, reason “does not want to come”.

21st May Several absent all week owing to sickness and others irregular.  All week Deborah Turnbull, Nellie and Christopher Foster.  Irregular on that account R Banks, Thos Beresford, Eliz A Parker.  A few absent owing to Hawes Poultry Show.  S A Metcalf absent owing to home duties.  She resides at Higher Greenfield and is much over the distance.

28th May Deborah Turnbull returned to school on Wednesday having been absent since Easter owing to sickness.

6th February Although heavy snowfall the children attended.  Only T Metcalfe of Greenfield absent.

5th May E A Lambert and Robt. Banks attended irregularly.  They are both 13 years of age and at that age parents think education is completed sufficiently and efficient enough to count sheep and lambs etc.  There are several young men that cannot read in this part of the parish.  Still the parents don’t feel the need for education or else it must be selfishness on their part and a saving of labour.

12th May Although 23 on the registers average only 19.6.   E A Lambert absent all week.  As HMI stated in report 1898 this is a difficult school for attendance.  Having only 5 children from the hamlet of Oughtershaw, a wet day affects all but these five.  Therefore attendance considering

the district has been excellent but still grant must suffer.  7 children coming a distance in wet weather though strong and healthy though not so sharp and intellectual after an exhausting drag of two or even three miles.

16th May Hawes Poultry Show.  D Turnbull and E A Lambert and Greenfield children absent.

6th June The master’s daughter G L King has had several pupils for music.  Eliz. Foster has progressed well and is now able to play one or two hymns in school.  She is only 8.  Maggie Metcalfe can also accompany on harmonica.

12th June Elizabeth Ann Butler left school, she has reached the 7th standard and her conduct has been very good.  She is a strong useful girl for home and has been a credit to our school.  Elizabeth Ann Lambert just 13 has left school, her education is only fair.  She is what we should call a fair standard V1 but weak in spelling.  This latter subject is sufficient to claim another 12 months at school but she is 13. 

26th June Admitted Isabella Allison and Isabella Turnbull.   Miss Woodd visited the school and awarded prizes:  1st Maud E King 399, Eliz Foster & ———-, Annie Banks 397, Eva King & R Parker 388, John Turnbull 386, Laura G King 385, John Parker 378, A A Foster 377, Mary Metcalfe —.  All the others are below 350.

19th September Roland Parker and Mary Ellen Foster admitted today.  Hannah Beresford and Isabella Turnbull entered in admission register also.

25th September Robert Banks returned to school on the 25th.

19th October Only two pairs of clean shoes in school today – Annie and Elizabeth Banks.

26th April Punished Charles King for throwing stones.  Percy Hoson came to school this afternoon at 3.30pm.  Sent a note to inform his mother.

27th April Sent to enquire reason for absence of S Procter and W Dinsdale.  They were both of them sick.

1st May H Tate was transferred to the mixed dept. 

4th May Ten new scholars admitted this week.

7th May Minnie Briscoe commenced her duties as monitress in this department.  Admitted one boy and five girls.

16th May Percy Howson came too late to complete his attendance.  Admitted H Birkett.

22nd May The children had a day’s holiday yesterday to celebrate the Relief of Mafeking.

24th May Had to send James and George Metcalfe home as they had been caught in a severe hailstorm and were wet through.

14th June Minnie Briscoe was away from school this morning ill.

15th June Sent monitress to bring J Saul.  He would not come with his sister.

28th June Mrs Frankland came to say the Doctor had advised her not to send John to school as he is afraid the boy is developing whooping cough.

6th July Mr Walling sent sweets to be distributed among the children.

31st August E and G Hudson are away suffering with whooping cough.

4th September H Foster coming into collision with E Barker was knocked against the playground wall and had his head badly cut.  Sent him home under the care of the monitress.

5th September Gave a half days holiday for the Annual West Riding Sheepdog trials which were held here.

7th September Punished E Slinger for staying away from school when sent.

13th September Eric Capstick fainted during the Object lesson this morning.  After he had recovered sent him home in charge of E Slinger.

28th September Had to send Harry Lupton home as he was ill.

15th October The Revd. J Turner informed the mistress that Esther Barker had left the school.  Admitted Mary and Martin Bell this morning.

24th October Oscar Boardman came too late to complete his attendance.  Sent Muriel Bentham home as her nose bled very badly.

22nd November Mrs Kilburn kindly presented a large cushion to the school. 

23rd November The Revd. J Turner presented Scripture Prizes to Doris Haynes, Violet Fletcher, Charles Metcalfe and John Frankland.  Punished V Hudson for stealing a chair from S Berry.

5th December HH Robinson was extremely sick in school.  Afterwards he fell asleep.

14th December A farmer named Metcalfe withdrew his child from school at 3.30 this afternoon without asking permission.

23rd October Oscar Boardman, during playtime threw a lighted match which alighted onto E Lee’s pinafore and burned a hole in it.  Warned the children not to strike matches.

8th November Had to punish a little girl for throwing stones.

2nd December Sent J Wilson home as he had fell ill.  

6th December The Revd J Turner visited, warned Mr Walling that Mrs Heaps said her little boy was covered with a rash.

29th January Whilst snowballing before school G Metcalfe chanced to pick up some snow which held a stone.  This he threw at R Brookes and cut his eyebrow with it.

20th February MA Fletcher bruised her brow severely with rushing against another child in the playground.

7th March Readmitted J Saul this week.

14th March Had to send G Metcalfe home as he was very sick in the afternoon.

27th March Received notice that R and E Tomlinson have left the district.

11th April Sent J Wadeson home as she was not well.

1st May Admitted J Fletcher and E Foster.  Monitress Briscoe (candidate) was transferred to the Mixed Department and Gladys Haynes entered upon her duties as Monitress in the Infants Department.

2nd June Peace having been declared between England and The Transvaal the children were given holiday to commemorate the event.
